Phoebe stared at her cell phone the way she would a hissing snake. Daniel was the last person she wanted to talk to tonight. But what if something was wrong with her grandfather? Surely Daniel would have told Carter if this were an emergency? She had to call. But first she pulled a dark red, scoop-necked dress in a crushproof fabric over her head and stepped into her pumps. After running a comb through her towel-dried hair, she reluctantly picked up the phone. Daniel answered on the first ring.“It’s Phoebe returning your call.”

“Where are you and who answered your phone?”

She balked at his peevish tone. “Is something wrong with Granddad?”

“Other than being in a snit because he wants the special interest file and you’re not at home to fax it? No.”

Her tense muscles loosened. Her grandfather had elected to take good ol’Danny Boy along on his male-only campaign strategy trip but had left Phoebe behind—a fact that irritated her immensely on many levels but relieved her on others. As her grandfather’s speech writer she’d be expected to turn his campaign platform into something palatable for the public, and there were certain policies even she couldn’t sell that needed to be downplayed. On the other hand, Phoebe detested the endless rounds of golf and political back-scratching. Decisions that could be made in a matter of minutes stretched into a marathon of bipartisan dancing on the putting greens. For an efficient person like her that seemed like a vast amount of wasted time.

Phoebe squared her shoulders. “I’m entitled to a vacation.”

“With whom?” Daniel repeated.

If she told him, he’d run straight to her grandfather, and Carter would be under full investigation within a matter of minutes. Not a desired outcome. “A friend.”

“A male friend? The senator won’t be happy.” No doubt Daniel would be spilling the information in hopes of gaining approval points for being a snitch. He’d never thought of anyone but himself.

Phoebe expelled an exasperated breath. “What do you—”

His ominous laugh made Phoebe’s skin prickle in a flesh-crawling way. “Or perhaps he will be. Wilton had begun to suspect you were gay. Knowing you’re with a man will be a huge relief in many respects despite the possible political backlash.”

Shock seized Phoebe’s vocal cords, quickly followed by a hot flush of anger. “And who planted that ridiculous assumption in his head, Daniel, since I’ve never given him any reason to believe that?”

The rumor could have originated from only one source—from someone who hadn’t wanted to accept any of the blame for their broken engagement. Daniel. Phoebe often had felt as if her ex-fiancé were trying to come between her and her grandfather. This only confirmed her suspicions. How dare Daniel try to break up what little family she had left? But if he had poisoned the senator’s mind with this sordid lie, it could explain why her grandfather had stopped throwing young lawyers at her after she ended her engagement two years ago.

“Phoebe, we both know you’re not a highly sexual woman.
